Tasting Note:

From barrel, Calvet and Thunevin’s 2007 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Hugo – which adds Syrah to the Grenache and Carignan (as well as fruit from Lesquerde’s granite soils) – is sumptuously rich and expansive, and velvety in texture, its mingling of blackberry and black raspberry preserves with nutmeg and dark chocolate is extravagantly ripe. Yet, there is none of the superficial sweetness or oak overlay often encountered at this address, and there is a striking sense of crushed stone and graphite that seem not only to add interest and counterpoint, but to somehow ground the wine. This clings with both memorable richness and memorable minerality. With ultra-refined tannins; density without an impression of weight; and scarcely any sense of alcoholic heat, this could well be a wine worth cellaring for a decade.

Grape Varieties:
