Jean Luc Thunevin became a "star" in the wine world in less than a decade, thanks to its successful garage wine, Château Valandraud. It’s probably when tasting Le Pin, a Pomerol wine produced from a very small vineyard, that the desire to make a great wine by himself started. Obsessed by wine, opiniated and determined, he finally realized his dream in 1991, first vintage of Château Valandraud. This was the start of a fantastic adventure leading to a quick success. From then on, he became the inspiration and kind of a leader for other garagistes. All these micro cuvées coming from low yield to become concentrated wines. The vineyard work is under the strict supervision of Murielle, Jean Luc’s wife, who leads her team to respect each vine and adapt the pruning individually, systematic deleafing campaigns and of course green harvesting are on the menu. Jean Luc aims to harvest at full maturity, he also copied the Burgundy vinification ways (pigeage…) to reach an optimum concentration. The wine is produced with a constant research of excellency.

Tasting Note:

Produced from the blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc spent 25 months in barrel prior to being bottled. The colour is a saturated dense purple and the expressive aromatics include sweet mulberries, black cherries, cassis, spring flowers, chocolate and background oak. Very rich and complex wine, opulent and full-bodied, this stunning, seamless classic is a fabulous example of the talents of Thunevin and his partner, Murielle Andraud. This 2011 can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years. Kudos!  RP95
