Central Otago is a spectacular region, halfway between the Equator and the South Pole. Its rugged beauty, generous people and outstanding grape growing environment drew John and Roberta to live here. This synergy and vitality inspire them to grow excellent wines.
They are artisan winegrowers dedicated to making honest wines that reflect the individuality of their vineyard sites. Apart from Gewürztraminer, they produce Pinot Noir from their organically managed vineyard, Pisa Terrace and Riesling from the steepest slopes of their vineyard in Central Otago, New Zealand.
An important consideration in coming to Central Otago and choosing their land was their desire to be environmentally sensitive. This applies to their site selection, vineyard development, its management, and ultimately their decision to be organic farmers. Pisa Terrace® Vineyard is Biogro certified. The most important advantage of organics for them is the ability to grow outstanding quality grapes that are healthy. In their wine, that translates into maximum expression of their vineyard site, that specialness that French call “terroir”.
Just as Ellero is a composite of John and Roberta surnames, Manell and Montero, the wines they make are a fusion of their lifelong history in the wine business, their choices, their hands on approach and the commitment to their vineyard and winemaking.
